Rep. Jim Clyburn, the sole South Carolina Democrat on Capitol Hill, told a spirited town hall meeting on Thursday that the nation "going to be fine" despite President Donald Trump's decision to pull the United States out of the Paris accord.

Clyburn likened Trump's move to his ongoing push to kill the Affordable Care Act, telling some 200 residents of Sumter, "It's repeal without anything to replace it with."

He also said the nation's political pulse is beginning to move away from staunch conservativism of the Republican platform.

"Some on the other side want you to give up, to feel overwhelmed. I believe if we stay in this fight, we're going to be fine," Clyburn said, according to The State newspaper.

He added: The country swings from the left to the right every eight years . . . The pendulum is moving back to the left."

The lawmaker said of the Affordable Care Act, which was passed under President Barack Obama, "We knew we weren't passing a perfect law . . . [but it helped us] get started . . . so everybody can have access."

He said efforts to repeal the law without a workable replacement plan are "crazy talk," The State reported.
