House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said on Sunday he will not be able to attend President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial on Monday in order to be with his wife, who is battling cancer, CNN reported.
Nadler, who is one of the House impeachment managers, issued a press release saying that that his wife was diagnosed with cancer last month, “has undergone surgery and is taking further steps to address the spread of the cancer."
He added that "On Monday, I will be in New York with her to meet with doctors, determine a path forward, and begin her treatment. I am sorry to miss some of the Senate Impeachment Trial, which is of critical importance to our democracy."
Nadler added that he intends to come back to Washington later on Monday and that he appreciates "the support of my colleagues and staff as I take this time to be with my wife and begin the long fight against her cancer."
Nadler also missed a day of the House’s impeachment inquiry last month to help take care of his wife, according to the New York Post.
Nadler’s wife, who has taught at Columbia University, has also served on several government boards for both New York City and New York state, Politico reported.
