House Democrat Jerry Nadler on Monday said President Barack Obama should immediately fire FBI Director James Comey for influencing the election.
The New York lawmaker made the comments on CNN's "New Day" program, asserting Comey should be fired for cause, regardless of whether his actions actually tipped the scales enough to lead to the election of Donald Trump.
"Whether it was the decisive agent or not, to have the police intervene an election, which is what happened, is unforgivable, a threat to our democracy, and it's got to be stopped," Nadler told host Chris Cuomo.
"And the people who did that have got be investigated and maybe prosecuted."
Nadler highlighted three indiscretions by Comey and his FBI:
- Comey giving his opinion of Hillary Clinton's actions regarding her email server back in July after announcing the agency wouldn't bring criminal charges.
- The leaks out of the FBI — especially the New York office — to Trump surrogate Rudy Giuliani.
- Comey's letter to Congress that he was reopening the Clinton email investigation.
Nadler pointed out that Clinton lost three key battleground states by about 110,000 votes despite winning popular vote by about 2 million.
"At that margin, Jim Comey is putting his thumb on the scale, he very well may have cost her the election," Nadler said. "But what Jim Comey did was so highly improper and wrong … it's unforgivable for a police agency to opine frankly about legal conduct.
"The president ought to fire Comey immediately and initiate an investigation."
