James Schultz, a White House ethics lawyer, has resigned to return to private practice, Politico is reporting.
Schultz had worked in the office of White House counsel Don McGahn dealing with ethics and financial disclosure issues, the website said.
He maintained his resignation revolved around his desire to return to private practice and had nothing to do with any ongoing controversies, according to Politico.
"That was something Don (McGahn), and I discussed very early on," Schultz told Politico. "I was interested in continuing with private practice and saw this as a tremendous opportunity to go serve and get things up and running and the plan was to move on about this time. ... These are typically year-to-about-18-months-type positions."
Schultz served as a deputy to the White House's senior ethics official, Deputy White House Counsel Stefan Passantino.
