James Comey, a former director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, called on lawmakers to reauthorize a national security tool in the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.
Comey made the call in a Thursday tweet.
The FISA provision allows the National Security Agency to collect communications of foreigners abroad without getting a warrant, even if the exchanges include U.S. citizens, The Hill reports.
The House of Representatives is set to vote Thursday on reauthorization of the provision. Critics of the act say that it allows the government to sidestep constitutional protections, according to the Hill.
President Donald Trump on Thursday issued a tweet critical of the reauthorization.
Trump followed that tweet up with another that said the reauthorization is needed.
