Bishop Harry Jackson Jr., a Maryland pastor who served as a spiritual adviser to President Donald Trump, died at home in Silver Spring.
He was 67.
The Washington Post described him as a “fiery voice for Black evangelicals while championing conservative positions on same-sex marriage and abortion…”
The Post noted that Jackson, a pastor at Hope Christian Church in Beltsville, Maryland, had visited the White House several times and delivered an Easter blessing this year.
Religion News Service said he had also attended a White House ceremony in September where Amy Coney Barrett was announced as Trump’s nominee to the Supreme Court.
And he had hosted Vice President Mike Pence at Hope Christian in June.
Pence tweeted out his condolences on Tuesday. He wrote: “Karen and I were saddened to learn of the passing of our dear friend, Bishop Harry Jackson, Jr. We are praying God’s comfort for the Jackson Family, the Hope Christian Church Congregation, and all who admired this Good and Great Man.”
The Washington Post noted that the pastor had been diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2005 and had suffered a stroke later that year. However, he had recovered and had continued to preach.
His cause of death on Monday was not announced.
