President Donald Trump's first-ever direct attack on special counsel Robert Mueller over the weekend signals a change in strategy by the president, the Daily Beast reports.
There are more attacks like those in the offing, even as his aides and associates plead with him not to do it, the Daily Beast reports.
Further, one media-savvy Trump surrogate warns the president to "tread carefully," noting poking the bear might not be the best approach.
"I think it's a very delicate balance," former GOP congressman Jack Kingston told the Daily Beast. "There's nothing unusual about sending signals, but I think because of the highly charged nature of the situation . . . [He should] make sure his lawyers know what he's up to.
"It's an area full of landmines, so tread carefully," Kingston told the Daily Beast.
Though Trump has repeatedly and frequently assailed the Russia probe since its inception, he had never, until Sunday, lobbed an assault at Mueller by name.
The accompanying speculation led one of Trump's lawyers to release a statement Sunday reiterating the president has no intention of firing Mueller.
Trump's decision to lay into Mueller — twice — by name via Twitter came just two days after a report Mueller had subpoenaed records from Trump Organization, the "red line" the president drew last year.
It also came the same day Mueller's team sent a list of questions to Trump's lawyers as part of the lead up to a potential sitdown with the president.
