GOP Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Sunday he would have “liked to see more face coverings” on those attending President Donald Trump’s speech at Mount Rushmore ahead of Independence Day.
In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Hutchinson said insisting that those at the speech follow CDC guidelines would have “set an example.”
“In terms of the gatherings themselves, a lot of them were canceled here,” Hutchinson said of his own state;
But “when you get to a national level,” he added about the Saturday speech at Mount Rushmore, “obviously I’d like to see more face coverings there to set an example.”
He added, that although “there should have been face coverings, they should have followed guidelines … it was a controlled environment.”
Hutchinson said people “have to live life,” though during the coronavirus pandemic “you have to be in a controlled environment.”
“There’s this balance,” he said, adding: “Let’s manage our way through this so we can live life and get through this…”
According to Hutchinson, if Trump wanted to hold a rally in Arkansas, “there would have to be social distancing, wearing a mask… following our guidelines.”
"That's what we would insist upon,” he said.
