Mike Huckabee says President Donald Trump was right to admit he was wrong when he appeared to disagree with U.S. intelligence that Russia was to blame for meddling in the 2016 presidential election.
“President Trump says he misspoke when he said in Helsinki that he didn’t see any reason why Russia would be behind U.S. election meddling, and that he meant to say ‘wouldn’t’ instead of ‘would.’ This is historic, since I don’t know if Trump has ever publicly admitted to getting something wrong before,” the former Arkansas governor and two time GOP presidential candidate wrote on his website.
“But I’m glad he is doing something to clean up the mess from that press conference rather than doubling-down to defend it.”
But Huckabee added that Trump’s mea culpa is unlikely to stop the controversy.
“I’m sure his opponents will continue ranting and railing that it’s not good enough, but Trump has always been extremely fortunate in having the enemies that he does,” he said.
“There is nothing he says or does that is too trifling or normal for the anti-Trump ‘Resistance’ crowd not to react as if someone set off a string of firecrackers in their shorts.”
