Speaker Paul Ryan reportedly told his fellow Republicans in the House to be more aggressive in their fundraising efforts for the 2018 midterm elections in order to counter Democratic challengers, The Hill reported Saturday.
Ryan made the comments to lawmakers in a closed-door meeting following reports that Democrats had made significant gains in raising money in the last quarter of 2017, outpacing 40 incumbent Republican candidates, the article explained.
Ryan also told his fellow congressmen to get assistance from the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) if needed, according to the Hill. He helped to raise $44 million in campaign funds in 2017 and said last month he would transfer $32 million to the NRCC ahead of the 2018 midterm elections.
Democrats are mounting fierce challenges in the midterm elections as they look to take back the majority in the House. However, Republicans are hopeful the recently passed tax reforms will give them an edge with voters.
