Trump Defends CIA Nominee: Dems Think Haspel's 'Too Tough on Terror'

By    |   Monday, 07 May 2018 07:27 AM EDT

President Donald Trump on Monday morning defended Gina Haspel, his nominee for CIA director who has come under fire over concerns about her role in the agency’s interrogation program.

In an early-morning Twitter post, he ridiculed Democrats, saying they oppose Haspel as "too tough on terror."

Haspel offered Friday to withdraw her name from consideration after repeated questions about her involvement with waterboarding and other tough agency interrogation methods. But the White House insisted Sunday that she had Trump's backing and would not withdraw.
