President Donald Trump on Tuesday was booed by House Republicans on Capitol Hill after he apparently mocked Rep. Mark Sanford, who lost his South Carolina primary last week after the president tweeted support for his opponent, according to reports.
"Is Mark Sanford here?" Trump apparently said, according to a tweet by Jake Sherman of Politico. "I just want to congratulate him on running a great race."
Sanford, who lost to state Rep. Katie Arrington, was in the room for the session, which was about immigration reform and address the separation of illegal children from their parents at the U.S. border.
Trump then called Sanford a "nasty guy" — according to Sherman — prompting boos in the closed-door meeting.
Other reporters also tweeted about the exchange:
Sanford lost his primary, 51 percent to 47 percent, after the president tweeted he was "nothing but trouble."
He has often clashed with Trump since the president took office last year — and Sanford also is a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, which has also frequently opposed Trump.
After his loss, Sanford denied the GOP was the party of Trump but acknowledged "in the case of last night, it cost me the election."
Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, who was also at the meeting, slammed Trump's comment as a "classless cheap shot."
