Congressional Republicans are pinning their hopes on President Donald Trump brokering a deal and averting a government shutdown, the Washington Examiner reports.

The president scheduled a meeting on Thursday, only one day before federal funding expires, with high-level members of both parties, including Minority Leaders Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., who skipped a meeting last week after Trump tweeted that he didn't see them making a deal.

"What I hope for is a process whereby we get top line numbers so we can actually finish this spending process," Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., told the Examiner.

A number of conservatives in the House hope to avoid another short-term spending bill, but if the leaders from both parties, including the president, would allow them to bypass this contingent.

"I hope the other side is receptive to true negotiations and not my way or the highway," said Rep. Chris Collins, R-N.Y. "I don't believe for a second that the president would be a my-way-or-the-highway guy. But we have certainly seen instances where Schumer is, but with all that said, no one wants to shut the government down."

"I suspect [Trump] will put it all on the table," Collins said. "But you have to have a dialogue coming back the other way of what might be acceptable, or some lines in the sand that aren't. You might as well figure that out tomorrow, and not the following day."

"Everything hinges on all sides coming up with a common set of numbers so you can actually negotiate the appropriations bills," Cole added. "You would hope it would be tomorrow, but it probably won't."

House Republicans have begun working on a short-term spending bill, but despite assurances from leadership, some conservatives aren't convinced it can pass.

"I think they are worried," said Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Ariz., who is planning on opposing the bill if it comes to a vote.
