Two Republican governors back the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump, reports The Washington Post.

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott became the first Republican governor to do so, calling the probe "appropriate."

Later, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker told reporters the situation was "deeply disturbing."

"I think the proper role and responsibility for Congress at this point is to investigate it and get to the bottom of it," he said.

Scott cautioned impeachment was a "very serious issue and should not be taken lightly or abused."

But he still backed the probe.

"I think we have much more to learn and need to understand all the facts as this serious allegation is considered," Scott told the Post. "Congress has a solemn responsibility to every American to fulfill its role in our government system of checks and balances."

Trump in a summer phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky asked for help in investigating Biden and his son, Hunter. In the days before the call, Trump ordered advisers freeze nearly $400 million in military aid for Ukraine.

Trump has denied allegations of a quid pro quo, though his actions have prompted speculation he was holding out the money as leverage for information on the Bidens.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., announced an impeachment inquiry Tuesday.
