The FBI is investigating GOP donor Li "Cindy" Yang — focusing on whether she illegally funneled money from China into President Donald Trump's re-election campaign or violated campaign finance laws, the Miami Herald reported.

According to the Herald, the probe illustrates how China might replace Russia as a cause of concern about foreign influence benefitting the Trump campaign.

Citing an unnamed source, the news outlet reported investigators got a federal grand jury subpoena Tuesday seeking records from Bing Bing Peranio, an employee of Yang's South Florida massage-parlor business who contributed $5,400 to the Trump campaign March 5, 2018.

Yang came to Peranio's workplace and helped her write the check, Peranio told The New York Times, which first reported the contribution.

Peranio told the Herald the FBI had interviewed her Thursday.

FBI agents based in West Palm Beach are trying to determine if Yang reimbursed Peranio for her contribution or delivered "anything of value" to her over that period to benefit the Trump campaign, which would be illegal, the Herald reported.

Yang ran a business that promised Chinese executives access to Trump and his family, particularly at Mar-a-Lago — and her activities raised questions of whether she was illegally using funds paid by foreigners to purchase tickets for political events, the Herald reported.
