Democratic Rep. Vicente Gonzalez said Monday he thinks former Vice President Joe Biden has more explaining to do about the Ukranian corruption scandal after Biden this weekend denied talking to his son about his time serving on the board of Ukranian gas company Burisma Holdings.
"Clearly something needs to be cleared up at this point, right?” the Texas lawmaker told CNN's Poppy Harlow. “So, yes, of course, I want an explanation on that.”
Trump's campaign "War Room" posted a clip from the Gonzalez interview on Twitter.
While Biden had said he "never" spoke with his son about Brusima, Hunter Biden was quoted in an article in The New Yorker in July as saying he talked with his father once about Burisma, and that the elder Biden had said to him "'I hope you know what you are doing,’ and I said, ‘I do.’ ”
Meanwhile, Democrats are demanding information about a whistleblower's complaint, after reports surfaced that it concerns a conversation between President Donald Trump and Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky and claims that Trump pushed the newly elected leader to investigate the Bidens. Trump himself has been calling for investigations into allegations that Biden played a role in the firing of former Ukranian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin, including claims that Biden, while he was vice president, threatened to end aid unless Shokin dropped an investigation into his son.
Gonzalez, who recently switched his endorsement from Julian Castro to Biden, also told CNN that while he's resisted calling for Trump's impeachment, that may change if the administration does not turn over the whistleblower complaint to the House Intelligence Committee, and if it turns out Trump withheld aid in exchange for reopening the Hunter Biden investigation.
"I don't think we have a choice under the Constitution," he said. "We must move forward with impeachment proceedings."
