President Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani was working with D.C. attorneys Joe DiGenova and his wife Victoria Toensing “off the books” in trying to pull negative information from Ukraine on Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden, according to a top U.S. official who spoke with Fox News.
“Two high-profile Washington lawyers, Joe diGenova, who’s been a fierce critic of the Democratic investigation, and his wife Victoria Toensing were working with Giuliani to get oppo research on Biden,” Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace said at the top of his broadcast.
“According to a top U.S. official, all three were working off the books apart from the administration,” Wallace added. “The only person in government who knows what they were doing is President Trump.”
Giuliani’s name is repeated several times in a whistleblower complaint filed last week detailing Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskiy where Trump pressures the European leader to start a probe into Biden and his son Hunter.
In an interview with Fox’s Maria Bartiromo, Giuliani denied he was working with DiGenova and Toensing.
"No. I didn't work with anybody to try and get dirt on Joe Biden," Giuliani said on "Sunday Morning Futures.” The information, he said, was given to him.
Trump is readying himself to defend against impeachment proceedings, initiated by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi last week following the release of a transcript between the president and Ukraine’s president in which Trump pressures the European leader to investigate political rival Joe Biden.
A complaint filed by an intelligence officer about Trump’s interactions with the leader of Ukraine was published Thursday. It reads, in part: “In the course of my official duties, I have received information from multiple U.S. Government officials that the president of the United States is using the power of his office to solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election.”
