Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned that Republican lawmakers have to fight for President Donald Trump or Democrats will regain power in the House, the Los Angeles Times reported.

"Republicans in general — not just Trump — are in a crossroads," Gingrich said. "And if they don't get their act together, (Nancy) Pelosi is going to become speaker and she's going to impeach Trump. That's how big the stakes are."

His comments come after a report in The Washington Post claimed Trump revealed highly classified information during a meeting with Russian officials.

And The New York Times reported a memo by James Comey revealed that Trump tried to stop an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Gingrich urged Trump to get tougher on the media and cancel White House press briefings, according to the newspaper. And he also suggested the White House not respond to damaging stories, which he called "garbage."

The former Georgia congressman said he was livid with the media, particularly with CNN. He claimed the press was giving the impression to the rest of the world that "America is terrifying" right now, the Times reported.

And he suggested the White House get stronger.

"The reason they're having a tough time in the White House is that they keep kidding themselves about the environment they're working in," Gingrich said. "If you're surrounded by lions and hyenas, feeding them just increases their hunger."

Gingrich said he is concerned Republicans in Congress are becoming wary.

"They're totally rattled," Gingrich said. He cited local town hall meetings that are disrupted by the "hard left," and other forms of intimidation and even death threats.

"You either decide you're going to cave and let the left own America," Gingrich said. "Or you're going to fight."

Gingrich's wife, Callista, is expected to be named U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican by Trump, according to Time magazine.
