Gingrich's American Solutions Shuts Down

Sunday, 28 August 2011 11:32 AM EDT

The advocacy and fundraising operation that former House Speaker Newt Gingrich spent over a decade building has shut down, reports The Washington Post.

American Solutions for Winning the Future was more than $.5 million in debt, despite raising $2.4 million in the first six months of the year, according to an Aug. 1 filing with the Internal Revenue Service.

“It closed down. There’s nothing to say,” said Gingrich adviser Jay Gaylord.

Gaylord, who took over the organization after Gingrich departed to focus on his presidential campaign, explained that he had experienced difficulties fundraising without Gingrich at the organization’s helm.

“We didn’t want to run the organization into deep, deep, deep debt. So we closed it down,” Gaylord said.

Gingrich told the Post he had no knowledge of American Solutions’ collapse. “I haven’t had anything to do with them since I left to run for president,” Gingrich said. He cited strict rules that prevent him, as a presidential candidate, from working internally with groups such as American Solutions.

At its peak, the organization was a fundraising machine, collecting more than $52 million in its first four years.

The group had more than 300,000 contributors and a number of wealthy donors, including casino mogul Sheldon Adelson, who gave $6 million alone, the Post reported.
