President Donald Trump on Wednesday congratulated Brian Kemp, who won a close Republican primary runoff to face Democrat Stacey Abrams in the race for Georgia governor in November.

Kemp, who had Trump's support, won the nomination over Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle, who had been the frontrunner back in May after beating Kemp 38.9 percent to 25.6 percent in the primary.

Because Cagle finished with less than 50 percent of the vote, however, the two advanced to a runoff.

Trump unexpectedly announced his "full and total endorsement" of Kemp last week, which may have pushed the race in his favor.
