California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Tuesday that barbershops and salons in most of the state's 58 counties, outside of Los Angeles, can start reopening with precautions to protect against the coronavirus, The Hill reports.
Newsom said in his daily press briefing, 47 of the 58 counties will allow barbershops and salons to reopen, though customers and employees must wear face coverings at all times. He also said the state is preparing guidelines for similar businesses that operate with close-contact, such as nail salons, as well as separate guidance for schools, facilities that provide child care, and camps Wednesday.
He added, California has experienced a 6.7% drop in hospitalizations in the past two weeks, but noted there had also been a .6% increase in patients who required an intensive care unit. Newsom also said Californians must continue to social distance and wear masks whenever possible when they cannot.
"The reality is, this has just begun," Newsom said. "It hasn't ended. And while we are moving forward because of stabilization, because of the good work that's been done by health officials all across this nation, all across the state of California specifically to suppress the spread of this virus, by no stretch of the imagination is this virus behind us."
