Americans have become increasingly divided over opinion of the FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to the latest poll from Pew Research Center.

According to a survey conducted in mid-July, there is a strong partisan divide over ICE, and a lesser divide over the FBI, though overall the public views the agency positively:

  • 72 percent of Republicans view ICE favorably.
  • 72 percent of Democrats view ICE unfavorably.
  • 65 percent of respondents view the FBI favorably.
  • 26 percent of respondents view the FBI unfavorably.
  • 77 percent of Democrats and left-leaning independents view the FBI favorably.
  • 49 percent of Republicans and right-leaning independents view the FBI favorably.

When President Donald Trump was sworn into office, 65 percent of Republicans held a positive opinion of the FBI, according to Pew. Democrats' opinions of the agency have remained unchanged, according to the polls.

Public support for other federal agencies, including the National Parks Service, the CIA and the Department of Health and Human Services, were less divisive, with the majority of respondents from both parties expressing favorable opinions when asked.

Pew surveyed about 1,000 adults between July 11-15, 2018 by phone. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percent.
