Eric Trump said his father, President Donald Trump, wants peace but sees protecting the U.S. and its allies as a high priority.
"You pray for peace. At the same time, my father has tremendous backbone, and the safety of this country comes first, and the safety of our allies comes first," Eric Trump told Fox News on Monday.
Trump has recently placed a major focus on U.S. security that began with a surprise airstrike against Syria nearly two weeks ago, followed by launching a non-nuclear "mother of all bombs" against ISIS terrorists in Afghanistan on Thursday. The president has also been sending warnings to North Korea over its nuclear weapons program.
Some in Washington have hailed the moves, while the president has also received criticism from those who maintain he has veered from the "America first" policy he stressed during his presidential campaign, the Washington Examiner reported Monday.
Eric Trump said security was a part of his father's core strategy.
"You have to have massive backbone when it comes to awful, awful dictators who don't like us, don't like our way of life," he said. "He will protect America, make no mistake about it, he will protect our country."
