Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., says House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler should prioritize an investigation “into how disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody” in his own neighborhood over the panel’s probe into Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s records during his time in the George W. Bush administration and “the Russia hoax.”
Gaetz was responding to a tweet by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez pushing for answers on Epstein’s suicide.
“I agree @AOC,” he said. “Chairman @RepJerryNadler should prioritize a Judiciary investigation into how Jeffrey Epstein died in federal custody (in Nadler’s own neighborhood!) over the Kavanaugh confirmation (which already happened), and the Russia hoax (which never happened).”
Epstein, 66, was found dead Saturday morning at 7:30 a.m. by suicide in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York, a federal jail in Manhattan. He was being held on federal sex trafficking charges and was facing up to 45 years in prison.
Last week the billionaire was found unconscious in his jail cell with marks on his neck, and prison officials were investigating the incident as a possible suicide attempt.
Nadler in a letter last week to the National Archives said he wants access to Kavanaugh’s records – which date from 2001-2006 – in order to pick up where the Senate Judiciary Committee left off.
The Democratic lawmaker also said Thursday that the committee has started official impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump.
