President-elect Donald Trump's choice to lead the Department of Transportation, Elaine Chao, says she's "open to all ideas," regarding privatization of air traffic control.
"I am cognizant of those who are in favor of it. I am cognizant of those who have safety concerns," Chao said at the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee hearing on her nomination, according to the Washington Examiner.
The idea of privatizing air traffic control has stirred controversy in the aviation industry.
The committee's leading Democrat, Florida Sen. Bill Nelson, asked Chao if she could explain the incoming administration's views on the issue.
Chao replied: "I'd like to be confirmed first."
During the hearing, Chao emphasized the need for help such as public-private partnerships to fund infrastructure.
"The government does not have the resources to address all the infrastructure needs within our country… it's also important to recognize that the way we build and deliver projects is as important as how much we invest," she said, according to The Washington Post.
Chao's husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, was the first witness on her behalf, The Post reports.
Chao has worked in Washington for three decades as a White House fellow at the Peace Corps, and as secretary of Labor under former President George W. Bush.
"Donald Trump's cabinet picks are so extreme, the mere fact that Chao thinks the Department of Transportation should continue to exist is offered as a reason Democrats should support her," Kevin DeGood, infrastructure policy leader at the Center for American Progress told The Post.
