The former Democratic governor of Pennsylvania inserted foot-in-mouth on Wednesday as he tried to take a shot at Donald Trump and ended up declaring, "There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women."
The jaw-dropping remark came as Ed Rendell,
speaking to The Washington Post, said he believed sexist remarks Trump has made about women would hurt him in the general election, especially among Republicans.
"Will he have some appeal to working-class Dems in Levittown or Bristol? Sure," Rendell, who also served as the mayor of Philadelphia, told The Post.
"For every one he'll lose 1½ , two Republican women. Trump's comments like 'You can't be a 10 if you're flat-chested,' that'll come back to haunt him."
Rendell then continued: "There are probably more ugly women in America than attractive women. People take that stuff personally."
The "ugly"crack was quickly denounced, even by Rendell allies.
Sabrina Singh, a spokeswoman for the Democratic Senate nominee Katie McGinty, whose campaign is chaired by Rendell,
told Philly.com, "Governor Rendell's comments were completely off-base and inappropriate."
And the Republican PAC America Rising said that Rendell's remarks could hurt Hillary Clinton in her bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. Rendell endorsed Clinton in January.
Rendell didn't immediately return requests for comment, The Associated Press reported.
It's not the first time Rendell has caused a stir with his quips. In 2010, he said the nation had turned into a "nation of wusses" after a Philadelphia Eagles game was called off because of a snowstorm.
