President Donald Trump wasted his Mount Rushmore speech “talking about dead traitors” rather than focusing on the increase in COVID-19 cases and Russian bounties on American soldiers’ heads, Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said Sunday.
In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the former Army lieutenant colonel said Trump had his “priorities … wrong.”
“What struck me at the speech at Mount Rushmore, he spent more time honoring dead confederates than he did the lives of our 130,000 Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19, or by warning Russia off of the bounty they’re putting on Americans’ heads. … Instead he had no time for that. He spent all his time talking about dead traitors.”
According to Duckworth, ”black women are a key to the victory for Democrats,” but she refused to demand that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden nominate one for his vice presidential pick.
“I think Joe Biden needs to make up his own mind and will make up his own mind,” she said. “He knows best who he needs for a vice president, who can help him connect with the American people, who can help him overcome the crises we're operating under right now, everything from rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic, make sure we're ready for the next pandemic, make sure we turn our economy around, and make sure we're not in conflict with the Russians putting bounties over our heads. He'll pick the right senator to do that.”
