President Donald Trump told a journalist two summers ago that he believed Russian President Vladimir Putin's denial of his government interfering with the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
The New York Times reported that Trump called one of its reporters and relayed what Putin told him after they met at the 2017 G-20 Summit in Hamburg, Germany.
"If we did [hack the election], we wouldn't have gotten caught because we're professionals," Trump recalled Putin saying.
"I thought that was a good point because they are some of the best in the world" at hacking, Trump added.
The Department of Justice is investigating whether the Trump campaign, including Trump himself, colluded with the Russians to defeat Hillary Clinton in the 2016 election.
