New Jersey County GOP Honors Donald Trump

By    |   Thursday, 27 February 2014 06:51 AM EST

The GOP in Somerset, N.J., honored Donald Trump as "Republican of the Year" at its Lincoln Day Dinner on Wednesday, CBS New York reported.

Trump, who had been mentioned as a possible GOP candidate for president in 2016, said he will decide soon whether to enter the New York gubernatorial race.

Somerset Republican chairman Al Gaburo said Trump was honored for developing the Trump National Country Club in Bedminster, which will be the venue of the 2017 Women's Open Championship.

Trump told the dinner audience that he expected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to overcome his recent Bridge-gate political troubles.

He told reporters that he did not think Republican donors were abandoning Christie and that he could still run for president.

"He's doing fine and it's going to be fine. We all go through these patches," Trump said. "I wish him well," the Lake Wylie Pilot reported.

Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, grew up in New Jersey and owns the Observer company that publishes PolitickerNJ, a website devoted to New Jersey politics.
