Sens. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., and Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., have begun working on an immigration bill that “will resemble our similar efforts in the past,” according to the Senate majority whip.
"If we can reach an agreement soon, very soon, we will have the base bill reintroduced and then that will be our starting point to build support as well as consider any additions too," Durbin, who is also the incoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, told reporters on Thursday, according to The Hill.
The two senators previously cooperated on reintroducing the DREAM Act, “which would allow immigrant students who were brought here as children and grew up in the United States to earn lawful permanent residence and eventually American citizenship.”
A spokesperson for Graham did not respond to The Hill’s questions about the senator’s talks with the Democrat.
Durbin told reporters that he’s contacted about half a dozen Republicans about the bill, and that his top priorities remain the DREAM Act and Temporary Protection Status.
"My hope is ... that we can through the Judiciary Committee move on an expedited basis the highest priorities and I'm working to build a group that might be able to do that," he said.
