Senate Democratic leaders Monday urged Republicans to support a resolution that asks President Donald Trump to reverse his decision to pull troops from northern Syria, saying that his call for strict sanctions on Turkey are not sufficient to reverse the damage withdrawing troops is causing.
In a statement from Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., Sens. Jack Reed, D-R.I., and Bob Menendez, D-N.J., the lawmakers said that strong sanctions are "good and justified" but they won't stop the consequences that will come from the "ISIS jailbreak," reports The Hill.
"The first step when Congress returns to session this week is for Republicans to join with us in passing a resolution making clear that both parties are demanding the president’s decision be reversed," they said.
Trump on Monday announced new sanctions and restrictions to target officials from Turkey who threaten the peace, security or stability of Syria, or who commit human rights abuses.
"President Trump should use this moment to step up, do the right thing, and correct course," the Schumer, Reed, and Menendez statement said. "He can listen to his national security and military advisors, and to the chorus of bipartisan voices in Congress and across the world who made it clear that this was a grave mistake worth reversing," Schumer, Reed and Menendez added.
Earlier in the day, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Sen. Lindsey Graham R-S.C., spoke about the sanctions package and a separate resolution against the administration's strategy.
