Democrats have given the United States, for the first time in its history, a "purely political impeachment," much like the British vote of no confidence, but there isn't a provision in the U.S. Constitution for that kind of action, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Tuesday.
"Presidents are elected," Gingrich told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They serve for four years. In fact, Alexander Hamilton worried in the Federalist Papers that we would have something like this kind of idiotic behavior by the Democrats."
Gingrich pointed out that Trump was initially attacked over Russia, which turned out "not to be true," and now there is the "current mess, where the president of Ukraine has said he certainly didn't feel pressured."
"This entire current fantasy of theirs is built around a person they were afraid to bring public because he would have been annihilated by the facts," said Gingrich. "So, I think where you are at is pretty straightforward. If you don't like Donald Trump, you will love the House brief. If you have an open mind, you are going to think the House brief is crazy."
Meanwhile, no Republican senators "decide to commit suicide" by voting against Trump, who enjoys a 93% rating among party members in a recent Gallup Poll, said Gingrich.
"I think the president frankly was brilliant to go to Davos so the opening day of the Senate trial he is in Davos with other world leaders making a great speech on the economy, which is clearly his biggest strength," said Gingrich.
He also criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer for his criticisms over an impeachment rules resolution from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
"The most that Schumer has going for him right now is whining," said Gingrich. "He doesn't have a case to make, so he is going to whine for a while. You can't blame him. He has got to do something or people won't think he is their leader."
