The number of Democrats who would describe the coronavirus pandemic as “extremely serious” is almost twice the number of Republicans who would say the same, according to a new poll from the de Beaumont Foundation.
Almost 2 in 3 Democrats said that the coronavirus situation is “extremely serious” at the moment, while about 1 in 3 Republicans rated it the same.
- 62% of Democrats.
- 33% of Republicans.
- 74% of adults in total.
“We don’t have a partisan divide — it’s a chasm,” said Frank Luntz, the conductor of the survey. “The words our leaders are using need an immediate upgrade. What they’re saying isn’t working. Democrats and Republicans simply think differently and act differently. We need to accept this as fact.
“Based on our findings, our leaders need to remove politics and partisanship from their messaging and give Americans a better reason to comply other than because it’s good for them,” he added. “They must remind people that it’s also good for the people they love and will speed up the return to a strong economy and a normal life.”
The foundation polled 800 registered voters from across the country, with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points.
