Democrats maintain the lead to take over the House of Representatives later this year, according to a Fox News poll released Wednesday.
Democrats need to flip 24 seats to take control of the House, and should be able to pull off the feat according to several surveys released over the past few weeks.
Fox News suggests the potential is there:
- President Trump's low approval rating (41 percent).
- The low rating of the GOP tax law (40 percent) compared to Obamacare (51 percent).
- The low rating of the Republican Party (39 percent favorable) compared to the 50 percent favorable rating of the Democratic Party.
- There is greater enthusiasm to vote in the midterms among out-of-power Democrats.
Sabato's Crystal Ball – a leading elections forecaster – in late July gave Democrats a greater than 50 percent chance to reclaim the chamber, which has been a Republican majority since the first half of President Barack Obama's first term.
The shifts toward Democrats come after a month of intensely negative press for President Donald Trump following his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the guilty plea of his former lawyer Michael Cohen, and the guilty verdict of former campaign chairman Paul Manafort.
The Fox News poll is based on interviews with 1,009 randomly chosen registered voters nationwide from Aug. 19-21, 2018. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points for all registered voters.
