Top Democratic Party fundraisers are complaining that party chief Tom Perez is failing to rebuild the party after its shocking loss to Donald Trump in last year's presidential election.
One top money man complained that Perez has failed to reach out to party members who bundle contributions from wealthy Democrats, The Hill reported Thursday.
"A lot of us feel like there's nothing exciting, nothing invigorating coming from that building and particularly from Tom Perez," he said, referring to the Democratic National Committee headquarters in Washington, D.C.
"I've never heard from him. Not once. If you want to show strength, you personally reach out to all the big fundraisers."
Democrats raised $38 million in the first six months of this year, but the Republican Party hit a bonanza in the same period with $75 million, with nearly half in small contributions that reflect a strong party base.
In July alone, Democrats collected only $3.8 million in the worst fundraising month since 2007. The Republican Party, meanwhile, netted $10.2 million for the same period.
Perez's critics also complain that he recently accepted a teaching position at his alma mater, Brown University.
"Being DNC chair is a full time job. There isn't time for side gigs," a party strategist told The Hill.
Some Democrat members of Congress faulted Perez on the record.
"There's a lot of room for improvement," said Rep. Luis Gutierrez of Illinois.
DNC spokesman Michael Tyler defended Perez, pointing to Democrat victories over incumbent Republicans in eight state legislative races.
But Republicans still control 32 state assemblies and 33 governorships.
