Democratic House candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Thursday she will not agree to debate conservative commentator Ben Shapiro after the latter offered to give her campaign $10,000 to do so.
Shapiro offered up the money during his radio show Wednesday, despite the fact that campaign finance laws stipulate that individual contributions must be capped at $2,700.
The offer gained traction on social media and Ocasio-Cortez — who edged Rep. Joe Crowley, who chairs the House Democratic caucus, in the June primary — responded via Twitter Thursday night, comparing the request to "catcalling:"
Shapiro fired back with his own tweets:
Ocasio-Cortez, 28, is a self-described socialist and worked for Sen. Bernie Sanders, D-Vt., during his presidential campaign in 2016. She is now running to represent New York's 14th district.
