Former New York City Democratic power broker Andrew Stein is endorsing Donald Trump for president, saying he sees the GOP nominee as someone who'll "shake things up" in Washington, cut taxes and be "a real doer."
In an interview with radio host John Catsimatidis airing Sunday on "The Cats Round Table," Stein, a former president of the City Council in the 1990s and a fixture in New York politics for a quarter-century, expands on his endorsement first unveiled in an opinion piece last Friday for The Wall Street Journal.
"I think the country’s in trouble," said Stein, who is now a business consultant. "Our economic growth is too slow. Our military is being decimated by [President Barack] Obama’s cuts … Our support for Israel has not been strong."
And he says Trump is focusing on those issues.
"I think he’ll be a strong leader," he said. "He’ll cut taxes like [presidents John F. Kennedy] and [Ronald] Reagan did and stimulate the economy," he added.
"He’ll shake things up in Washington … He’s a real doer."
Hillary Clinton, he added, "exemplifies the status quo," saying that's "not what the country needs now."
Stein was sentenced to three years' probation for tax evasion in 2011.
