Texas Sen. Ted Cruz's decision to endorse Donald Trump for president is being met with both criticism and relief from members of both political parties.

Cruz announced Friday in a lengthy Facebook post he will vote for Trump, a Republican, on Nov 8. This comes two months after he gave a speech at the Republican National Convention and refused to endorse Trump's candidacy.

Democrat Hillary Clinton reacted to the news by retweeting something Cruz wrote in April, a post that criticized Trump for not releasing his tax returns.

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, Trump's running mate, seemed happy Cruz decided to endorse the real estate mogul.

Republican strategist and political commentator Ana Navarro criticized Cruz for throwing his political weight behind the man who once insulted his wife on the campaign trail.

Alice Stewart, a former spokeswoman for the Cruz campaign, spoke with CNN's Jake Tapper about Cruz's endorsement and said there wasn't much of a choice.

"He thinks first and foremost that Donald Trump will be a better president than Hillary Clinton. He feels she is unfit to be president," Stewart said.

"Right now we have a conservative leader in Donald Trump or the liberal progressive in Hillary Clinton. We don't have a choice."

NBC News reporter Hallie Jackson received reaction from Rick Tyler, another former spokesman for the Cruz campaign.

Amanda Carpenter, a former senior communications adviser and speechwriter for Cruz, joined Tyler in condemning her old boss' decision to get behind Trump.

Conservative media pundit Steve Deace wrote a column at Conservative Review and concluded that Cruz's endorsement goes against a set of endorsement rules Deace came up with.

"The conservative graveyard is littered with the remains of would-be champions, who buried themselves after misspending their political capital, and choosing the wrong hills to die on," Deace wrote. "As someone that knows, respects, and loves Ted Cruz, my fear is his endorsing Trump risks adding his name to that tragic list."

Conservative writer Erick Erickson reacted to the endorsement with several posts on his Twitter feed, including:

Timothy Stanley of London's Daily Telegraph wrote an opinion story for CNN Friday. After praising Cruz for standing up for his principles at the convention, Stanley said:

"By endorsing Trump, he has now tarnished the memory of the best thing he ever did in politics. There is no point to him after this. And that, in the words of Trump, is 'sad.'"
