DeMint Mulls Filibuster on Debt Limit Hike

Like many other Republicans, Sen. Jim DeMint, S.C., doesn’t like the idea of raising the government’s $14.3 trillion debt limit without serious spending cuts. And he’s ready to do something about it, The Hill reports.

demint, deficit, ceilingHe told the Laura Ingraham Show that he may filibuster an upcoming bill to lift the debt ceiling if it doesn't contain substantive fiscal reform. Asked if such a move could turn out to be the GOP's "Waterloo" in next year’s elections, DeMint said, "If it is, then let it be.”

Republican leaders should draw the line on this issue, he says. "I think Republicans have to decide this is a time to start the fight. Not passing the debt ceiling is not going to cause us to default on our debt."
