Major supporters of the move to defund Obamacare, including the Senate Conservatives Fund and several Republican lawmakers, said Tuesday that over one million Americans have signed an online petition that demands Congress refuse any funding for President Obama’s health care law, th
e Washington Times reports.
The SCF, which calls itself a “grassroots organization” dedicated to promoting conservative policies and candidates, made the claim on DontFundObamcare.com.
They see it as a major sign of galvanized support for the effort to wipe Obamacare off the books as part of an upcoming spending debate on Capitol Hill this fall.
Congressional Republican leadership and senior GOP members have been reticent to throw their weight behind the movement, for fear of potential public backlash if their stand against the Obamacare detains a short-term spending resolution and shuts down the federal government.
But Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Mike Lee, R-Utah, both outspoken opponents of Obamacare, are amping up their involvement.
They appear in a pair of new advertisements that were funded by the SCF.
Lawmakers have the “power of the purse,” Cruz says in his ad. “And we need Congress to stand up and defund Obamacare now.”
