Republican Congressman Darrell Issa clarified to
ABC News on Thursday his view of the position Donald Trump plays within the GOP.
"[Trump's] voice is the voice of the man we will put before the voters to be president of the United States," Issa said in an interview on ABC News' "Powerhouse Politics" podcast.
"Paul Ryan is our speaker … and he will be a co-equal voice."
The Congressman from California, who originally supported Marco Rubio, looks forward to the unification of the Republican Party, but strongly believes in upholding separation of powers, saying "we cannot just hand over anything to one person."
"Paul Ryan takes very seriously, as I do, the fact that we are a separate co-equal," Issa told ABC News. "We're not a team and we're not a rubber stamp."
Issa called Ryan the unifier of the party, and told the ABC News podcast the speaker will throw his endorsement behind Trump "not later than the third day of the convention."
Earlier this week, Issa told Fox News that there are no "perfect" presidents as he critiqued George Herbert Walker Bush's tenure, one which forced Republicans to "hold our nose and vote for" him.
