Florida Rep. Curt Clawson announced Thursday night he will not seek reelection, making him the 10th legislator moving on or retiring from the Sunshine State's congressional delegation, reports
The Hill.
"Since my mother's passing last year, our family has gone through significant change and transition," Clawson said, according to The Hill. "I believe that now is a good time to pass the baton and spend more time close to home."
Clawson said he'll finish his term, which expires in early January.
The Bonita Springs Republican won the seat in a special election two years ago to replace Rep. Trey Radel, who resigned from office after being busted for cocaine possession.
A member of the House Freedom Caucus, Clawson voted against John Boehner for House speaker in 2015, and against Paul Ryan for speaker last October.
Clawson joins nine other Florida lawmakers who are retiring or leaving their posts.
Sen. Marco Rubio won't be returning to the Senate after his failed run at the Republican nomination.
According to The Hill, Four lawmakers are retiring to run for Rubio's spot on the Senate: Republican Reps. Ron DeSantis and David Jolly, and Democratic Reps. Patrick Murphy and Alan Grayson.
Veterans Affairs Chairman Jeff Miller, R-Fla., GOP Reps. Richard Nugent, and Ander Crenshaw are also leaving, as is Democratic Rep. Gwen Graham.
In a state, Clawson said he believes in the need for legislators who aren't longtime politicians:
"The idea of citizen legislators that come without ambition and put the country and their constituents first is what a lot of the Founding Fathers really did envision," Clawson said, according to
News-Press.
