Cruz, Kasich May Win Key Delegates From NYC's Jewish Votes

The political news website headed by noted statistician Nate Silver says Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich could pick up some of New York City's Jewish Vote in Tuesday's Empire State primary.

"At this point, Ted Cruz and John Kasich are after delegates wherever they can find them," says Clare Malone, a senior political writer for FiveThirtyEight.

"In the New York primary Tuesday, Cruz and Kasich are looking to win delegates with a demographic you might not expect to get a lot of attention in a Republican primary: Jewish voters."

And, Malone writes, the delegates they could potentially win live in politically and culturally conservative Jewish areas of Brooklyn, where both candidates have been vigorously campaigning.

She says of the 1.1. million Jews in New York metro area, 55 percent lean Democratic while 31 percent lean Republican — which is more right-leaning than the rest of the nation's Jewish population.

"New York's relative conservatism of New York's Jewish population has to do with the city's high number of Orthodox Jews, who tend to vote for Republicans," Malone says.

And that's where Cruz and Kasich are hoping to score. But whatever delegates they pick up, recent polls says Donald Trump will easily win the GOP primary.
