Members of the liberal Congressional Progressive Caucus voted on Tuesday to endorse the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment investigation against President Donald Trump, saying it was "impossible" to ignore the "mounting evidence" against him.
“The Congressional Progressive Caucus strongly endorses the House Judiciary Committee’s current formal impeachment investigation and the adoption of the Resolution of Investigative Procedures,” a statement from the lawmakers' group reads, reports The Washington Post. "Our duty is to uphold the Constitution and we must do all we can to protect our democracy.”
The move pushes to the growing momentum among Democrats for an impeachment inquiry that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi continues to oppose.
The Democrat-led House Judiciary Committee, meanwhile, meets on Thursday to consider a resolution that would formalize an ongoing investigation that could lead to impeaching Trump. The caucus said in its statement that Trump “has repeatedly broken the law, committed impeachable offenses, and continues to obstruct justice.”
The group is comprised of nearly 100 members of the House and one senator, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. Democratic Reps. Pramila Jayapal of Washington and Mark Pocan of Wisconsin co-chair the caucus.
According to a Post analysis, 70 of the 96 House members who are listed on the caucus' website say they support an impeachment inquiry, while another 24 say congressional committees that are already conducting investigations into Trump should continue them.
One member's position is unclear and Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, who represents the District of Columbia, does not have a vote in the House, The Post noted.
