Rep. Dent: Congress Has Not Provided 'Robust Oversight' of Trump

By    |   Monday, 16 April 2018 12:48 PM EDT

Congress needs to provide more checks on President Donald Trump, Rep. Charlie Dent, R-Penn., said Monday.

“That is one area where we have made a mistake in Congress—it is that we have not provided enough robust oversight on the president on some of these issues,” Dent said Monday on CNN’s "New Day."

"We should push back," Dent added.

The congressman said one of the issues is regarding special counsel Robert Mueller and the possibility that Trump could fire him. “It would be a terrible mistake for the president to fire him… It would be a self-destructive act to do that, and it would set off a political crisis,” Dent said in the interview.

Dent has been critical of the president before. "The spontaneity and lack of impulse control are areas of concern for lots of members on both sides of the aisle," Dent said March 24.

In December, Dent said Trump played "a factor, but not the factor" in his decision to retire from Congress at the end of his term.
