Half of Americans oppose arming teachers and school administrators, although Republicans and conservatives overwhelmingly support this proposal, according to a YouGov poll released Wednesday.
President Donald Trump has supported the controversial idea, indicating aspects of such a proposal could be up to states. The Florida senate in early March passed a bill to allow some teachers to carry guns in schools following a mass shooting at a high school there where a gunman killed 17 and injured at least 17, and Kansas is considering a bill that would make schools liable for not arming teachers.
The poll, conducted March 25-27, surveyed 1,500 respondents.
It also found:
- 50 percent of respondents either strongly opposed or somewhat opposed allowing teachers and administrators to carry firearms on school property, while 36 percent supported it.
- 69 percent who identified as Republicans supported the idea, compared to 24 percent who opposed it.
- 65 percent of African Americans opposed the idea, while 21 percent said they supported it.
