A group of hundreds of college and university leaders signed a letter calling on House and Senate leadership to protect young immigrants from plans to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The letter urges support for dreamers, immigrants illegally brought to the U.S. as children. The letter called them "outstanding young people."
"Colleges and universities have seen these remarkable people up close, in our classrooms and as our colleagues and friends. Despite the challenges they face, they have made incredible contributions to our country and its economy and security. They should continue to be able to do so," the leaders wrote in the letter.
Included with the letter is a list of hundreds of signatures from universities and colleges.
President Donald Trump's administration ordered the DACA program to be ended with a six-month time limit for Congress to come up with a permanent solution.
"If we are unable to protect these dreamers, we will be shutting the door to an entire generation of individuals who seek to contribute their best to America," the organizations said in the letter.
Nearly two dozen companies are planning a coalition to demand that dreamers be allowed a path to permanent residency, according to documents seen by Reuters.
