The vast majority of voters, including two-thirds of Republicans, support a path to U.S. citizenship for those protected under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, according to the latest Harvard-Harris , The Hill reports.

  • 77 percent of all voters support work permits and a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, known as "Dreamers."
  • 66 percent of Republicans said the same
  • 80 percent of voters say the solution should come from Congress

"There is very strong support for restoring the DACA program through congressional legislation, with wide majorities of Republican voters supporting a deal with increased border security," Harvard-Harris co-director Mark Penn said. "President Trump put himself in a win-win position by using it as a leverage for more border security and dodging a legal fight over DACA with Republican governors."

  • 77 percent of all voters support citizenship for undocumented immigrants should they learn english, pay any fines or back taxes and procure jobs that pay taxes.
  • 66 percent of Republicans would support citizenship for undocumented immigrants under these conditions.
  • 67 percent said those with job skills should receive preference when emigrating to this country.
  • 33 percent said those with relatives already here should get priority.
  • 57 percent oppose California’s "Sanctuary State" bill that keeps local and state law enforcement from assisting federal immigration authorities.
  • 70 percent said local law enforcement should check a suspect’s immigration status once an arrest is made, and then work with federal immigration authorities.

"Voters oppose the California sanctuary state law by a wide margin." Penn said.

"There is no question that the Trump administration is on solid ground when it wants local authorities to cooperate with ICE, so Democratic intransigence on this is out of step with public opinion," he added. "You see the public showing widespread support for the Dreamers and for comprehensive immigration reform, but their widespread sympathy for the 11 million here stops when it concerns arrests for a crime."
