Forty-six percent of registered voters say they favor former President Donald Trump, compared to 45% who say they back President Joe Biden, according to CNBC's All-American Economic Survey.
The numbers fall within the margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points — putting the two political rivals in a virtual tie. Trump led 48%-42% in the news outlet's December poll.
Here are how the results break down in the current survey:
- 39% say they approve of the job Biden is doing in office, compared to 56%, who say they disapprove.
- 37% say they approve of the president's handling of the economy, compared to 58% who said they disapprove.
- 29% say they approve of Biden's handling of security at the border, while 64% say they disapprove.
- 54% said say they were pessimistic about the economy; 21% say they are optimistic; 14% say they are pessimistic now, but optimistic for the future; 2% say they are optimistic now, but pessimistic for the future.
- 45% say they do not believe there will be a recession in the nest 12 months, compared to 32% who say there will be.
- 8% says the U.S.. is already experiencing a recession.
- 39%, a plurality, say they are convinced they will be better off financially if Trump wins, compared with 23% who say they would better off if Biden wins — 34% says it makes no difference.
Voters say Trump is better at dealing with inflation, the overall economy, and crime, compared to Biden, who is seen at being better than Trump in handling healthcare.
The survey, conducted March 15-19, polled 1,001 registered voters.
