Amid all the hubbub of Donald Trump's Tuesday tweet about punishing flag burners came a reminder that Hillary Clinton once introduced a bill to criminalize flag burning, per a story in the Washington Examiner.
Actually, in true Clinton fashion, she opposed a constitutional amendment to criminalize it, but then introduced a bill to make it illegal. Even The New York Times took Clinton to task for "pandering."
Trump caused a stir when he suggested those who burn the flag should be jailed for a year or perhaps lose their citizenship. However, the Supreme Court ruled nearly 30 years ago that burning the flag is protected.
That didn't stop Clinton in 2006.
"Fortunately, we have an opportunity to protect our flag in a bipartisan and constitutional way," Clinton said in her floor speech before the measure failed.
